2026 Dutton Fun Day Parade Marshals, Larry and Jean Harman!

Larry was born and raised in Dutton. He graduated from Dutton High School in 1964 and moved to Billings to attend Rocky Mountain College for four years, graduating with a Math and Physics degree in 1968. While he was there, a young woman from Helena caught his eye…

Jean was born in Kalispell and raised in Helena, where she graduated from Helena High School in 1966. She left Helena for Billings to attend Rocky Mountain College. It was while she was going to school there that she caught the eye of a young man from Dutton…

Larry and Jean were married in October of 1968, and they moved back to Dutton to farm Larry’s family’s farm. They moved into the house that Larry’s grandfather built in the 1930s and made their home there. In 1972, they welcomed their first daughter, Bess, into their family. Three years later, their younger daughter, Dora, was born, and their family was complete.

Larry and Jean continued to farm alongside Larry’s parents until 1986, when Larry’s dad was no longer able to farm. Larry and Jean then ran the farm themselves, with the help of hired hands, until their own retirement in 2012.

In their 58 years of marriage, and throughout Larry’s lifetime of residence in Dutton, the Harmans have been a vital part of the Dutton community and several organizations, serving both in leadership roles and as volunteers.

Larry was a local Boy Scout leader, youth group leader, member of the Dutton United Methodist Church, member of the Dutton United Methodist Church Board, member of the Flathead Lake United Methodist Camp Board, and a member of the Montana Grain Growers Association.

Jean was also involved with the Dutton United Methodist Church in the same capacity as Larry and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was the Dutton Fun Day Barbeque Chairwoman for several years, part of the Dutton High School Booster Club and the Dutton 4-H Club, and served as camp director for 4-H Camp. Jean was the Dutton Library Director for several years and is now on both the Teton County Library Board and the local library board.

Retirement doesn’t slow the Harmans down. Retirement just means attending their grandchildren’s sporting and music events, reading, traveling through Glacier Park, and working on their hobbies. Larry enjoys photography and attends his weekly woodturning meeting, and Jean is widely known for her baking, quilting, and gardening.

We’re excited to have this couple as our 2026 Dutton Fun Day “Glory Days” Parade Marshals!
